BAYWATCH Review & Analysis

I’ve long been a proponent of the Popcorn Flick.  There’s something to be said for a couple of hours of brainless entertainment.  After all, that’s the very premise of “guilty pleasure” tv shows like The Bachelorette.

So, it was with that mindset that I settled into my seat for Baywatch starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron and Priyanka Chopra.  There could be no better truth in advertising than what the trailer promised and the full-length feature delivered.  The movie is saturated with the anticipated raunchy jokes–though they weren’t quite as over-the-top as expected from the post-American Pie generation.  The movie’s self-aware humor addresses everything from Efron’s looks to Chopra’s potential as a future Bond girl.

Baywatch delivers exactly as predicted.  Sure, the set ups are obvious and the jokes hit on the same note a few too many times.  This movie, like the long-running tv show which inspired it, isn’t academic and there are just as many manly muscles as — ahem, feminine curves.

The actors commit to Baywatch with acting gusto, a significant element in selling a movie in which Johnson and Efron must believably carry two full-sized refrigerators on their backs.  Their commitment to this silliness sells the concept and the entirety of the movie itself.

Baywatch also stars Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Ilfenesh Hadera and Jon Bass.

THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS Review & Analysis

The Fate of the Furious is the 8th installment of the action movie franchise starring Vin Diesel and once again it delivers exactly what audiences expect: car chases and action.  F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) directs an ensemble who drive, fight and shoot their way out of seemingly-impossible situations.

In fact, it’s the cast’s deep commitment to the premise that makes it all work.  Whereas other projects include actors who seem to wink at the camera in an “isn’t this ridiculous” sort of way, these actors are all-in.  In addition to Vin Diesel, the movie stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood and Kurt Russell.  They believe, so I believe.

The Fate of the Furious has some uncredited stars as well: the companies featured in moments of product placement.  To learn how product placement works along with behind-the-scenes info about shooting on-location, take a look below:

MOANA Movie Review & Analysis

In the latest Disney animated film MOANA, the title character voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, is features a young woman who goes on a quest to save her village and finds herself in the process.  In her journey she must seek out the demigod Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, and return the stolen heart of Te Fiti, a mother earth goddess who created all of the islands from her heart.

This is the time of year to start handing out awards and I am ready to give MOANA the best animated feature Oscar.  Disney managed to recapture their magic to create a beautiful story with fantastic characters and gorgeous music.  Of course, the fact that MOANA is a fabulous female role model doesn’t hurt, either.

This is a girl who is strong, brave and smart.  She follows her heart and stands up to her father and everyone else who tells her that the greater world beyond the shoreline is dangerous.  Moana trusts that the ocean has chosen her to save her people and readily takes up the quest.  Pay attention to just how often Moana’s discouraged in her journey.  Her father and Maui in particular, both in song and speech, tell her that the world is scary, that she is only a young girl, and that she needs to stop dreaming.

Pay attention, too, to all of the conch shell symbolism throughout the film.
